The Grasshoppers Special Olympics Soccer Program of Presque Isle has named Andrew Perry as the new head coach.
Perry succeeds Carl Michaud, the program’s founder and longtime head coach, who recently stepped down after relocating to central Maine.
While Carl’s departure marks the end of an era for the Grasshoppers, the program remains strong thanks to the foundation he built and the countless athletes he inspired over the years, according to local Special Olympics officials.
The Grasshoppers Special Olympics Soccer Program has provided athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to develop soccer skills, build friendships, stay active, and experience teamwork and competition.
As the program looks to the future, Perry brings enthusiasm, leadership, and a strong commitment to the program, said Steve Richard, chair of the area management team.
Having been involved with the team and its athletes, Perry understands the culture Michaud helped establish and is dedicated to building upon that legacy.
“Andrew is a natural fit to lead the Grasshoppers,” Richard said. “He shares the commitment to inclusion, teamwork and helping athletes reach their fullest potential. His positive attitude and passion for the game will serve our athletes well as the program enters this exciting new chapter.”
The Grasshoppers Special Olympics Soccer Program welcomes athletes of all abilities and focuses on skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, fitness and fun. The program provides opportunities for athletes to compete, build confidence and form lasting friendships while representing their community with pride.
Preparations are already underway for the upcoming season, which begins in July. Athletes, families, volunteers and supporters are looking forward to another exciting year of soccer and continued growth under Perry’s leadership.
The Grasshoppers thank Michaud for his years of dedication and service and warmly welcome Perry to the helm.
