FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the return of the Chamber’s Smokin’ BBQ Cook-Off, taking place Saturday, July 11 in Fort Fairfield as part of the annual Maine Potato Blossom Festival.
This year’s event introduces a new amateur “Backyard BBQ” category, created in response to growing interest from community members eager to participate in the competition. The addition reflects the Chamber’s commitment to evolving the event based on feedback and expanding opportunities for local involvement.
Amateur participants will be judged on six pieces of chicken and six pork ribs, with three chances to win in each category. Prizes will be awarded as follows: first place ($400), second place ($200) and third place ($100) for both chicken and ribs. Amateur teams will compete separately from professional teams.
“This event has always been about great food and great people,” LaNiece Sirois of the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce said. “We’ve heard from many in our community who wanted a way to get involved, and by adding the Backyard BBQ category we’re opening the door for more folks to participate, have fun, and experience the excitement of competition.”
At 3 p.m., the popular People’s Choice public tasting and voting will begin. BBQ teams may serve any tasting item of their choosing, as long as it includes a smoked meat. Only 100 tickets will be available for this exclusive tasting experience. Voting will conclude at 4:30 p.m., followed by the announcement of winners. People’s Choice awards will include first, second and third place prizes.
To support competing teams, Hillside IGA is offering a 15% discount on meat purchases for registered competitors. Participants are encouraged to place orders in advance.
