101 Years Ago – April 5, 1917
Sherrard in Guard — Vernon Sherrard, a Presque Isle High School graduate and a student at Tufts Dental College for the last six months, enlisted in the Massachusetts National Guard and had been transferred to the Medical Corps.
Odd Fellows — Aroostook Rebekah lodge cleared about $50 at the banquet furnished the I. O. O. F. District meeting.
75 Years Ago – April 8, 1943
Earns promotion — The highest promotion at the Army air base was that of Sgt. Dana Street, who became Tech. Sergeant. Sgt. Street, a chief clerk in the operations office, attended operations school at Fort Logan, Colo. He was there to help activate the new 346th Bomb Group (H). Sgt. Street, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Street of Presque Isle, was formerly employed as teller by the Northern National Bank of Presque Isle.
Bridge collapsed — The Clark Brook bridge on the Egypt Road collapsed under the weight of one of the city’s plows. Previous to this incident, the bridge had been damaged and weakened by a heavy impact. City Manager Mark Trafton stated that due to present labor conditions and other conditions beyond his control, it would be difficult to determine just when the bridge could be repaired.
50 Years Ago – April 3, 1968
Hi-Y Cabinet — The Presque Isle High School Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y Clubs, in what had become the rule rather than the exception, continued to break records. At the annual invitational Youth Leadership Workshop, held in Bar Harbor, Presque Isle students were elected to two of five state offices. Miss Susan Hillman, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hillman and District Treasurer and President of her Tri-Hi-Y Club, was elected to the position of State Hi-Y Tri-Hi-Y Cabinet Treasurer. Michael Roix, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dana Roix and a delegate to the Inter American Youth Conference in Brazil, was re-elected for a second term to the office of State Cabinet President.
Club contributes — Jerry Dow president of the Snow Drifters Club, presented a $100 check to REv. Melvin White for the Washburn Chapter of the Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation and another for $400 to James Briggs for the Caribou Chapter.
25 Years Ago – April 7, 1993
Excellence award — SAD 1 Nutrition Program employees were lauded for their efforts by the Maine School Food Service Association April 3 at the organization’s annual spring conference in Bangor. Food service director Karen Kettlewell and employees Joyce Bither, Carmen Wiggins, Lorette Nicknair, Jean Easler, Debbie McPherson and Myrtle Pelkey received the award of excellence and were recognized for their accomplishments.
Sportsmanship honor — Steve Shaw, coach of the Central Aroostook varsity boys’ basketball team, accepted the sportsmanship banner presented by IAABO #50, the local association of basketball officials. Central Aroostook was also awarded the honor on the girls’ side, with coach Julie Bradstreet accepting.
