Owl men split in Vermont, women fall to Clippers

The University of Maine at Presque Isle soccer teams kicked off their season over the weekend, with the men splitting a pair of matches in Vermont and the women losing at UM-Machias.

Sophomore goalkeeper Caleb Thompson made a spectacular save in a tie game with 12 minutes to play before Andre Rossignol and Stephen Cochrane tallied last goals in the Owls’ 3-1 victory over Vermont Tech Sunday. Jack Harrington scored UMPI’s first goal.

The Owls lost to Green Mountain College Saturday, 2-1, in their season opener. Dakota Patterson scored off a Chris Udobe assist in the second half for the Owls’ goal. Thompson made six saves for UMPI in goal.

The UMPI women were defeated by the Clippers in Machias Sunday, losing 7-1. Kelsey Robinson converted a Jordi Legassie pass for the only goal for the Owls, which came in the second half.

Amber Chasse of Ashland, a freshman, had a dominant outing for the Clippers with three goals and two assists.

The UMPI squads play their first home matches Wednesday, Sept. 5, as UM-Machias makes the trip north. The women’s game is at 1 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 3 p.m.
