UMPI president briefs club on nursing program, greenhouse

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center.  The guest speaker was Dr. Ray Rice, president and provost at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. He spoke about the programs that have been added in recent years at the college.

The Agricultural Science Program includes biology, chemistry, soil science, agribusiness and more.  It also includes hands-on learning experiences. The college plans to break ground on a greenhouse in the spring of 2019.

Another program now offered is the bachelor of science in nursing program in collaboration with the University of Maine at Fort Kent.  This program is important in order to help with the shortage of trained professionals in the nursing field.

They also offer a “your pace” program for working learners to go at their own pace in order to complete degrees.  There are typically around 100 who enroll each term, mostly in the business program.

Rice also spoke on question 4, a $49 million bond package that, if approved by voters in November, will be matched by at least $49 million in private and other public funds to support Maine’s public universities.

Library happenings

The Walter T. A. Hansen Memorial Library board of directors held their monthly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 4.  The board welcomes ideas from their patrons and the public on programs that they would like to see offered.

The Bidding for Good Auction will also take place early next year and the Board welcomes items to be offered in the auction.  Crafts, food items, services and more are typically listed and help support the library in expanding their collection and making improvements.
