Several local squads make it into state XC meet

BELFAST, Maine — Aroostook County will be well represented at the state championships in cross country Saturday.

Ten teams from the region qualified for the state meet following their performances at the Northern Regionals Oct. 20 at the Troy A. Howard Middle School course. Teams finishing in the top 50 percent in their respective divisions earned the opportunity to race next weekend. Those races will be held at the same venue.

The Caribou and Presque Isle boys and girls all advanced in Class B, while the Houlton, MSSM and Fort Fairfield girls and the GHCA, Washburn and MSSM boys all made it in Class C.

A few other individuals from local schools also moved on by finishing within the top 30 in their competitions.

The Caribou boys placed second to Hermon in Class B. The Vikings scored 61 points, which was 27 behind the Hawks. Presque Isle tallied 182 points to end up fifth out of 13 teams.

The Viking girls came in fourth place with 125 points and the Wildcats took sixth place with 151. Thirteen teams participated and MDI edged out Ellsworth for the title.

In Class C, the GHCA boys were fifth out of 13 teams with 153 points. Washburn came in sixth with 155 and MSSM seventh with 193. Orono was the boys champion with 26 points.

On the girls’ side, with seven teams competing, Houlton was the runner-up with 85, MSSM took third with 88 and Fort Fairfield fourth with 92. Orono came in first with 23 points.

Registering top-30 placements on the five-kilometer course in each of the four races were:

Class B boys: second, Dylan Marrero, Caribou, 17:13.3; fourth, Kyle Boucher, Caribou, 17:26.3; 12th, Jordan Duplessie, Caribou, 17:51.3; 20th, Ethan Holmquist, Caribou, 18:22.6; 22nd, Owen McQuarrie, Presque Isle, 18:27.2; 23rd, Malachai Willey, Caribou, 18:29.8; and 27th, Trace Cyr, Presque Isle, 18:42.6.

Class B girls: seventh, Madison Jandreau, Presque Isle, 21:02.8; ninth, Ashley Violette, Caribou, 21:05.7; 19th, Ellie Smith, Presque Isle, 22:05.8; 25th, Maddie Jackson, Presque Isle, 22:38.8; 26th, Kacie Haney, Caribou, 22:38.9; and 27th, Katrina Salch, Caribou, 22:41.6.

Class C boys: 13th, Jay Philbrick, MSSM, 18:59.5; 15th, Sawyer LaChance, MSSM, 18:59.5; 16th, Jeremy Stone, GHCA, 19:02.9; 19th, Cole Winslow, GHCA, 19:12; 21st, Aidan Churchill, Washburn, 19:18.7; and 23rd, Daniel Ross, Houlton, 19:26.9.

Class C girls: third, Dolcie Tanguay, MSSM, 21:30.8; fourth, Teagan Ewings, GHCA, 21:36.4; sixth, Madison McCarthy, MSSM, 21:42.2; ninth, Emmalyne Drake, Houlton, 22:15.4; 13th, Jessica Halsey, Fort Fairfield, 22:37; 14th, Madison Miller, Washburn, 22:40.7; 20th, Ellie Grant, Houlton, 23:09.1; 23rd, Makenna Cooley, Houlton, 23:16.8; and 26th, Kassandra Farley, Washburn, 23:49.6.
