A heads-up on yard waste disposal

With the warm and dry weather we have had recently, many homeowners have gotten out and started cleaning up their yards.  After all the hard work, the question then arises about what to do with the tree branches and rakings from the lawn.

One option is to deliver them to the Presque Isle Landfill.  You do not need a decal permit to dispose of your rakings and yard debris at the landfill.  There is also no fee for what is known as “yard waste,” which is defined as grass clippings, leaves, prunings and tree branches and tree limbs of not more than one-half inch in diameter.

Residents also don’t need a permit to dispose of wood waste, which includes brush, tree branches and tree limbs larger than one-half inch in diameter.  However, there is a fee for wood waste, which is $45 per ton with a minimum fee of $10, which covers the first 400 pounds.

The former Transfer Station and Recycling Center on Missile Street are now closed.  That site is now private property, so no waste materials of any kind can be delivered there.

If you are not able to deliver your yard waste or wood waste to the landfill, you may contact the two local waste haulers, Gil’s Sanitation or Star City Sanitation, or one of the many property maintenance companies that perform yard maintenance.
