From the Bunkers — week of July 8, 2019

Oh it’s summertime, and the living is easy, to borrow a line from the music industry. Warm temps and sunny skies made for a wonderful holiday week at Houlton Community Golf Course. Good to see many returning faces to the course. It was very busy this past weekend with many positive remarks about the conditions on our course.

The Houlton High School Alumni Association Scramble was held Saturday. The timing was great, as all groups got back to the clubhouse before the thunderstorms arrived. First place went to the team of Sean Dolomont, Peter Stanley, and Drew and Tony Marino shooting a gross eight under par 28. Second place winners were the three person team of Ryan Brewer, Dakota Sleeper, and Bob Cleary. Third place went to Kayla and Manny Martinez, Mike Fleming, and Al Condon. Congratulations to all players on a good tournament and thank you from the Alumni Association.

Men’s Twilight League has less than four points between the top five teams. Leaders are Bob Gray/Jerry York, followed by Ray Mailman/Jon Turner, and Ryan Brewer/Kevin Cartin. I guess the rest of us know who to go after now.

The ladies had a successful “Bingo, Bango, Bongo” tournament last Tuesday. They will be playing again this Tuesday. Call the proshop to add your name to the list for this week. Junior Golf will continue on Monday at 8 a.m. Please be considerate of our future golfers.

Upcoming events, The County Open on Aug. 10-11. An eighteen-hole stroke play tournament at Houlton on Saturday, and eighteen-hole, four person team scramble on Sunday at VaJoWa in Island Falls. This is the 30th anniversary of this annual fundraiser for the Health Services Foundation. Through these tournaments, we have helped the hospital and our community, by raising over $620,000 for new medical technologies. I hope you will be playing in one or both games. Or if you cannot play, consider being a hole sponsor. Call Lori at 521-2147 for more information. The Club Championship will be contested later in August and then the Babe Caron Memorial over Labor Day weekend.

The grounds crew will be working on a few greens this week, weather permitting, so please be aware. This work is being done to improve the drainage on the greens. Thank you for your understanding. We are all working to maintain our course at the fine levels for play as we can. With beautiful weather forecast for this week. We hope to see you on the course.
