EASTON, Maine — Throughout the year, the Easton National Honor Society has participated in and completed projects for the community and for other countries that fulfilled our state service project responsibilities. One of the first projects we completed was a food drive for the Easton Food Pantry. During the holidays, the NHS members sponsored a school-wide food drive collecting food for our local pantry. With the help of all the classes in our school, we were able to deliver five boxes of food to our local pantry.
The next project, lasting from November to March, was the Feed the County Clothing Drive. The goal of this project was to get the community involved in donating their old clothing to Catholic Charities. This clothing is then “turned into money” to buy food for the Aroostook County Food Bank.
Along with collecting clothing, the chapter raised money for Stop Hunger Now, an organization that provides food to feed starving people around the world. Once again, the NHS members asked the junior and senior high school students for their assistance in raising money. Our goal was to provide 1,600 meals to the state service project, and with the help of the student body, we exceeded our goal and provided 1,800 meals.
In March we were proud to be able to join the Key Club, Student Council and Varsity Club in sponsoring a benefit supper for the families who lost their homes to fires this winter. The support from the Easton community was tremendous.
Our last project this year will be our annual fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis. We will once again be sponsoring our annual Coke float/brownie a-la-mode sale during the Elementary School play intermission May 17 at 6:30 p.m. We always look forward to this fun event. It is well received by the parents of the elementary actors and actresses and we find it to be very successful.
