Limestone Police investigating counterfeit bill

LIMESTONE, Maine — The Limestone Police Department is investigating the distribution of a counterfeit $20 bill given to a local business last week.

The department posted a photo of the bill to their social media page on Oct. 20, featuring a photo of the bill with Asian lettering on both sides.

Limestone Police Chief Stacey Mahan said on Wednesday, Oct. 28, that the incident is still under investigation and that the business is checking their cameras to determine who may have given them the bill.

Mahan said his research shows that bills of this type have been around for at least 10 years, with some being sold online.

He said the writing on both sides is the primary difference in appearance, adding that the bill also feels like it is made with a different type of paper.

The chief suggested that business owners concerned about receiving counterfeit money could invest in a marking pen or ultraviolet light to ensure the money they are given is legitimate.

“Be conscious of the bills you get, wherever you get them,” he said, “especially if there is some sort of stamp or marking on it.”
