Hodgdon, SA split baseball, softball openers

HODGDON, Maine — A picturesque April afternoon provided the perfect backdrop for Monday’s season-opening baseball and softball contests between Hodgdon and Southern Aroostook.

On the baseball diamond, Hodgdon rolled to a 9-1 victory over visiting Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook. Drew Duttweiler earned the win on the mound striking out nine over five innings. 

Duttweiler helped his cause with a double and a walk, scoring two runs. He was also hit by a pitch. TJ Fitzpatrick doubled and walked twice for the Hawks. 

For Southern Aroostook Trafton Russell singled twice and scored a run while Camden Porter doubled, singled and was walked.

In the softball game, Southern Aroostook’s Madison Russell pitched the win as the Warriors notched a 14-9 victory over the Hawks. Russell struck out 12 in tossing a complete game, complete game.

Jennah Brooks had two two hits, including a two-out, two-run single. Jayniece Wenzloff added a double with an RBI, and Russell chipped in with a single and drove in a run.

“We took advantage of several walks and HBPs and ran the bases well,” Southern Aroostook coach Paul Sherman said. 

Marissa Dow pitched for Hodgdon. Aleyah Matheson had a grand slam and a double, while Dow added two doubles and a single.
