PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Track and field athletes from throughout Aroostook County converged on Presque Isle Middle School for the Aroostook League Championships Friday, May 20.
And when the dust had settled, the Presque Isle boys and Houlton/Greater Houlton Christian Academy girls were crowned the 2022 champions. It marks the second straight year that the Shires have won the County crown.
The Shire girls edged Presque Isle by a mere six points to secure the championship. The complete girls team scores were: 1, Houlton, 177; 2, Presque Isle, 171; 3, Fort Kent, 110; 4, Caribou, 43; 5, Fort Fairfield, 27; 6, Washburn, 22; and 7, Limestone/MSSM, 21.
On the boys side, the Wildcats ran away from the pack to easily claim the championship. The boys team scores were: 1, Presque Isle, 211; 2, Caribou, 185; 3, Limestone/MSSM, 70; 4, Houlton, 44; 5, Fort Fairfield, 29; 6, Fort Kent, 28; 7, Washburn, 13.
“It was a great day for the Aroostook League Championships in Presque Isle,” Houlton coach Chris Rines said. “The typically windy venue was rather calm compared to previous years and that allowed for some fast times from our athletes. It was a tight race, but we were able to overcome a few key missing personnel for the win in what is one of the closest finishes I think this championship has ever seen.”
Houlton/GHCA freshman Teanne Ewings was the top scoring female athlete of the meet earning a perfect 40 points and the Howard Lello trophy. Caribou freshman Evan Durepo was the boys top scorer also with a perfect 40 and took home the Emery Plourde trophy.
