First Air Ambulance Service In Northern Maine Established Here– First in northern Maine and among few in this section of the country, an air ambulance service was instituted at Houlton this week by the Dunn Funeral home in collaboration with Linwood Lawrence, head of the Aroostook Air Academy. Donald Dunn, president of the Dunn company, said that the need for this type of rapid transportation of the sick or injured had been apparent for some time.
Patten Slugs 11-6 Win from Sherman– Patten lost a 19-hit attack on two Sherman chuckers here today to rack up an 11 to 6 Southern Aroostook League win. The locals scored all their runs and made six of their seven hits to a big seventh inning rally. Palmer pitched an almost perfect ball up to the seventh and Johnson threw a hitless ball in the last two innings. Asher led the Patten attack with 3 doubles and two singles in six tries. Lloyd Wilson had three for four including the day’s longest bingle, a triple in the 2nd. Mike Bouchard was the only Sherman player to get two hits.

Salvation Army To Break Ground For New Building – The groundbreaking ceremonies of the new County headquarters of the Salvation Army will take place in Houlton Monday morning at 9:30, with construction crews then to start immediately on the erection of the new building. The headquarters will be located on the old Exchange parking lot on Court street, and Captain Walter Thompson announced that the parking lot will be closed off to all traffic this Sunday at 6pm
Bishop Promoted By Air Force To Master Sergeant – Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bishop of Island Falls has just received word that their son, Walter John, has recently been promoted to master sergeant. Sgt. Bishop is married to the former Iris Deal of West Virginia and they have two children, Kenneth Allen and Deanna Lynn. They now reside in Austin, Texas, and Sgt. Bishop is stationed at the Bergstrom Air Force Base. He is the NCO in the radar shop that prepares all the navigation equipment on the RF4C Phantom Jets.

Houlton to celebrate annual Potato Feast Days – One potato, two potato, three potato, four. Residents will find those and a whole lot more at this weekend’s 39th annual Potato Feast Days in Houlton.
Shiretowners struggle as season opens – The Houlton boy’s soccer team is holding its own as the 1998 season campaign opens. “We’re going to struggle early,” said coach Matt Tardy. “We just have to weather the first part of the season/ Last year, the Shiretowners claimed the school’s first-ever boys Eastern Maine Class B runner-up title. This year, the potential is there to do it again, but the shiretowners will have to hurdle some obstacles early.
