CARIBOU, Maine — A local business owner is awaiting sentencing after being found guilty last week of unlawful sexual touching.
Steve A. Plummer, 53, of Fort Fairfield now faces a sentencing hearing on Nov. 28 at Caribou Superior Court.
Plummer, who owns Aroostook County Fitness in Presque Isle, is listed in the Maine Sex Offender Registry. He was charged in 2022 with unlawful sexual touching and domestic violence assault after a minor living in his home reported feeling unsafe to a school counselor, according to court records.
Police were called to a Fort Fairfield school when the minor, known as “Child A” in the court records, reported being touched inappropriately by Plummer, according to the arrest report.
A school counselor reported talking to the child, who was crying, Fort Fairfield Police Chief Matthew Cummings said in the report. The child admitted to not feeling safe at home and described instances of Plummer touching them in private places and making sexual comments.
Police talked to the school nurse and the child’s mother, records stated. Officers called the Department of Health and Human Services and the Child Advocacy Center in Fort Fairfield. The young person described to child advocacy officials being inappropriately touched and receiving sexual comments, according to court records.
Fort Fairfield police arrested Plummer on Nov. 9, 2022, on both charges, according to the arrest warrant. He was released on $1,000 bail.
Plummer appeared Oct. 5 and 6 in Caribou Superior Court for a bench trial, where he was convicted on the charge of unlawful sexual touching. He was not convicted for domestic violence assault.
The charge is a Class D misdemeanor under Maine law, punishable by up to 364 days incarceration and a $2,000 fine.
