Portage caps off Round-Up with parade

Portage Lake’s Main Street was filled with bystanders on a hot and sunny Sunday afternoon as a parade celebrated the final day of the town’s Summer Round-Up.

Emergency and police vehicles, tractors, floats and more rolled along the route, which ended just past Coffin’s store.

Many in the lineup threw out candy, and delighted youngsters scampered around to collect the treats.

Among the entries were Ed Bodeau as Portage’s oldest citizen, a color guard and a group of unicyclists, some on tall cycles, who entertained the crowd.

The Round-Up, held Thursday through Sunday, included a whoopie pie festival, cardboard boat race, bicycle raffle and trick-or-treat for kids and live music.

The annual canoe carry took place Saturday, in which participants carried a canoe from nearby Little Machias Lake to Portage Lake.

Sponsored by the Portage Lake Historical Society, the carry symbolizes Native Americans and settlers carrying, or portaging, canoes between the Aroostook River and Fish Lake chain, according to the event’s social media page.

A special ceremony at the town’s veterans park on Sunday dedicated a bench to Maine State Police dog Preacher, who was shot during a February standoff and later died of his injuries.

The festival also featured a pancake breakfast, lobster bake and fireworks.
