Caribou elects incumbent, newcomer to City Council

In a three-person race for two open seats on the Caribou City Council, voters elected incumbent Dan Bagley and newcomer Lori Knight Phair to three-year terms on Tuesday.

Knight Phair led the race with 1,130 votes. Bagley, now elected to a second council term, received 1,042. Ben Tucker, a Libertarian who based his campaign ion fiscal conservatism, took in 665 votes.

Bagley, an Air Force veteran who owns an engineering consulting firm, ran on a platform of “ensuring critical investments” in the city while “exercising fiscal restraint.”

He told the Bangor Daily News in September that promoting business and residential development and curbing blight in Caribou are also among his priorities.

“I’m so honored that you’ve placed your trust in me to serve another term as your City Councilor,” Bagley wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday morning. “We have a lot of work to do over the next 3 years, and pledge to do my best to make sure Caribou remains a great place to live and work!”

Knight Phair is the principal of Connor Consolidated School, located in the unorganized township directly north of Caribou. Raised in Caribou, she holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Maine and told the BDN she’s worked in schools her entire career.

Her platform prioritized cleaning up rundown properties, ensuring government transparency and combatting the city’s substance abuse struggles.

Knight Phair will replace Joan Theriault, the City Council’s longest serving member, who was first elected in 2012 and did not seek reelection this fall.
