Legal vs. illegal immigration

To the editor:

When people speak of immigration for some reason, they fail to make a distinction between legal and illegal immigration. Failure to use the words “legal” and “illegal” when referring to immigrants can be very misleading. Mr. Kipp in his latest letter didn’t disappoint. His comment that immigrants contribute positively to our country is in most cases true — that is, legal immigrants. Illegal immigrants, on the other hand, are another story. For many reasons they are a problem.

Lets take a look into the 5-year-old boy, Liam Ramos, that Mr. Kipp said was jailed in Texas. When this boy’s father was approached by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents he fled, leaving his son alone in his car. The agents left one agent with the boy while the others tracked the father down. The boy and the father are being detained in a family detention facility in Dilley, Texas, not quite the story Mr. Kipp would have us believe.

Mr. Kipp also stated that open borders are an option. I’m not sure what he meant by that. I thought that the Immigration act of 1924 (Johnson Reed act) ended open borders.

I find it difficult to believe that there are so many people, like Mr. Gartley stated in his letter, that think that ICE should be abolished. Think about it. There are millions of illegals in our country. Many of them are a danger to our way of life. There are murderers. rapists and criminals of all kinds roaming our streets that shouldn’t be here.

Local law enforcement usually acts after a crime is committed, while the purpose of ICE is to remove the criminal before a crime can take place. In law enforcement there are always going to be mistakes made, some minor, some tragic.  Unfortunately, ICE is under political scrutiny and their mistakes are reported while the mistakes of other enforcement agencies are treated mostly like business as usual.

To make my point, there were 64 murders in Minneapolis in 2025. Where were the demonstrators when these murders happened?
