Thanks to the Maine Veterans Home

To the editor:

I wrote this poem to express my appreciation for the Maine Veterans Home here in Caribou. It’s not out of fear or rumor of it closing, it’s just how I feel about the place where my husband now lives.

Not only does he receive wonderful care, but also when I walk through the door and down the halls, I am treated so wonderfully. I just needed to express my feeling for the place.

There is a very special place
In this town of Caribou
Where many who our country served
Receive the care that they deserve.

Some went off to foreign lands,
Some to war — wherever the command.
Some are troubled in their minds
And aging bodies that need care.
A place like this one is very rare.

Wives can live here. You will find
That will give you peace of mine.
One day Susan came to call.
She sure was welcomed there by all.

Susan would not want it closed.
She cares about The County.
She would work to keep it going,
Her concern and love for us showing.

Thanks to all who served our country.
You deserve the rest.
Thank you, all you medical folks
And workers — you’re the best.
