Taxes. I’m sure they rank pretty high on everyone’s list of “necessary evils”. As much as we don’t like paying them, taxes do provide all those services that we need to function – schools, police and fire departments, snow removal, recreation programs and the library to name just a few: As everyone is aware, the City of Presque Isle mails out its tax bills in July and payment is due in October.
For those taxpayers who would rather not make a single large payment in October, we do have an alternative: the Tax Club allows members to make 12 monthly payments beginning on Jan. 20, 2008 instead of the one annual payment.
Tax Clubs are typically set up in December and January. To be eligible all prior taxes must be paid. To join, simply come to a Tax Clerk’s window at City Hall. The clerk will review your most current tax bill and give you a coupon book for making and keeping track of your payments. Interest will not be assessed on regular payments made in November and December of 2008.
If you can’t make it to City Hall, call 764-2509 and we’ll be happy to set up your Tax Club over the telephone and mail the coupon book to you. It doesn’t make your taxes go away, but it may make payments easier for you to handle.
If you’re not interested in monthly installments, but still find it difficult to make that single payment in October, you can also prepay any portion of your 2008 taxes at any time.
One other reminder – any unpaid taxes as of December 31 will be reported in the city’s annual report.
