CASTINE — One teenager died and two others were hurt in a Sunday night accident in Castine.
State Police Spokesman Steve McCausland said 18-year-old Brett Gould of Carrabassett Valley and formerly of Benedicta, was driving his 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier on Battle Avenue, about a mile from Maine Maritime Academy (MMA), when he lost control and left the road.
Gould died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. He had two passengers, 18-year-old Brandon McAvoy of Benedicta who was not injured and 18-year-old Eric Ravasz of Lamont, Ill. Ravasz was treated and released from Blue Hill Memorial Hospital for facial injuries.
Speed and alcohol were listed as causes of the 9 p.m. accident. Troopers say Gould lost control on a curve near MMA; the car overturned and came to rest on its roof in a ditch. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Gould, a student at MMA, was also a 2007 graduate of Katahdin High School who participated in multiple extra-curricular activities at the Stacyville high school. An MMA spokesperson said the campus flag will be flown at half-staff for the next few days in memory of Gould.
According to McCausland, this crash marked the third highway death in Maine over the weekend. Early Saturday morning, a 36-year-old Casco woman died in a one-car crash. Also on Saturday, a 16-year-old Cannan girl died after her car was struck by a van after it sideswiped a school bus.
