Little League baseball, softball seasons open

    The Houlton area Little League Association and the Katahdin Valley Little League each opened their season last week with several baseball and softball games.

    Last Friday in the Katahdin Valley Little League, Trent Cullinan threw a one-hitter to lead Oakfield over Patten, 2-0. Eric Cole pitched a complete game for Patten. Oakfield is now 4-0 to start the season.
    Island Falls picked up the win over Sherman, 7-4.
    Robbie Rockwell threw the first three innings, striking out nine for the Island Falls club, while Rob Gould finished the game from the mound, with seven strikeouts. Parker Walker went 2-for-3 from the plate, while Cameron Landry and Dillon Porter each had hits for the winners.
    For Sherman, Sal Clukey went 2-for-3 and drove in a run.
    In softball action, the Aroostook Auto Glass team lost their opener to Island Falls, 18-5 last Friday.
    Nicole Goguen pitched a complete game for Aroostook Auto Glass.
    On Saturday, the Aroostook Auto Glass squad traveled to Patten and evened their season record with a 16-13 victory.
    Katie Condon, who singled, doubled and hit an inside-the-park home run, worked five innings, with Katelyn Wiggins closing.
    Gwen Parsons doubled and Natalie Hill, Wiggins, Emma Drew and Goguen all singled for the winners.
    Last Thursday, the F.A. Peabody Company softball team traveled to Oakfield in each team’s season opener. Oakfield emerged the winner of this contest.
    In the 9-10-year-old Houlton Little League, the Houlton Elks defeated Mooers Realty, 13-2 behind Ryan Dee’s 12 strikeouts in a five-inning effort. Dee backed his own cause with two hits, including an inside-the-park home run. Nick Cowperthwaite collected two hits, while Jacob Brown tripled and Logan Beaton singled for the Elks.
    Josh Upton led Mooers Realty with his second inside-the-park homer of the week. Seth Hannigan tripled, while Andrew Theriault picked up a hit for Mooers. Payton Porter struck out seven.
    In the 11-12-year-old league, Houlton Wal-Mart triumphed 12-1 over Linneus. Connor Grant allowed a run and three hits over four innings of work, while backing his own cause with a double, triple, and two singles for three RBIs. Dallas Moore banged a two-run homer, while Tyler Brown singled and doubled for the winners.
    For Linneus, Sam Horton had a pair of singles to drive in a run.
    Last Wednesday, the Houlton Rotary Club posted their second win with a 17-11 victory over Mooers Realty in the 9-10-year-old league.
    Garrett Ring collected three hits, including an inside the park homer and a double. Parker Brewer and Billy Phillips each had two hits, while Garrett Putnam had five strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings.
    For Mooers Realty, Upton hit his first inside-the-park home run of the season, while also doubling. Caleb Tribou had his first Little League hit, while driving in two runs. Matt Tuttle and Hunter McLaughlin each doubled. Ben Boutilier had three strikeouts over three innings of work.
    In the older league, Machias Savings Bank overtook Linneus, 13-5 behind a strong pitching effort by Daniel Howe and Hunter Hanning’s bat. Hanning belted two long homers and a triple, while Gage Hunt had a pair of singles and a triple for the winners.
    Brandon Malone led Linneus with a pair of hits.
    In the Katahdin Valley Little League, Oakfield improves to 3-0 on the season, with a 13-11 win over host Island Falls last Wednesday.
    Cody Lassonde notched the win, while Will McGary had three hits, including a homer.
    For Island Falls, who came back with five runs in the final inning, Parker Walker and Robbie Rockwell each stroked three hits.
    Patten used extra innings to defeat Sherman, 14-13. Jared Wood hit his first home run of the season for Patten.
    On Tuesday, May 13, Savings Bank of Maine edged Machias Savings Bank, 5-3, in the Houlton 11-12-year-old Little League.
    Ian Goetsch allowed four hits and three runs over five innings, while striking out six and walking two to lead Savings Bank of Maine, while     Kole Buzzeo and Isaac Cone each had run-scoring singles and Barrett Dunn doubled.
    In the 9-10-year-old league, Wal-Mart overpowered the Elks, 19-9.
    Moore had 10 strikeouts for Wal-Mart, while Dee singled and homered for the Elks.
    In Monday’s action, May 12, Houlton Farms Dairy opened its season with a 13-7 victory over Savings Bank of Maine in the 11-12-year-old division.
    Jon Tuttle led Farms Dairy with three singles and a triple, as Isaiah Straubel picked up the win with a strong relief effort from Tyler Bartlett.
    For Savings Bank of Maine, Jacob Drew singled, doubled and tripled, while Cole Suitter chipped in with a pair of walks and two singles.
    It was a dramatic win for the Rotary Club in the 9-10-year-old league, as they mounted a comeback effort to overtake the Elks, 10-4. The game was in favor of the Elks, 4-2, until the fifth inning when Rotary rallied for eight runs and the win behind Noah Blake’s base-clearing triple.
    Ring picked up the win on the mound for Rotary, while Dee pitched four innings for the Elks, allowing two runs.
    In the Katahdin Valley, Island Falls defeated Patten, 8-2.
    Rockwell, the winning pitcher, along with Walker, Cameron Landry and Dillion Porter all had RBI-hits in the game for Island Falls.
    For Patten, Nason Caron had two hits.
    In other action, Oakfield picked up their second win over Sherman, 15-8.
