Hornets outpace Eagles
It was anyone’s game last Friday at Ashland as the Hornet girls met against the Limestone Eagles. Both teams had a goal of winning their last regular season game and played to a tie at the end of the third quarter, 30-30. However, Ashland’s home fervor led the Hornets to their 13th win, 45-39.
Senior Mindy Chasse held the inside and shot for 22 points for the Hornets. Whitney Flint added another 10 points.
Senior Melanie Allen sailed in the high Eagle score with 18 points. Stacy Bernier contributed 13 points for Limestone.
The Ashland boys’ inside and outside game proved too much for Katahdin to handle in the final game of the regular season for the Hornets, who took the Cougars down, 61-52.
“Tyler Cote hit a couple of threes early to bring out their defense, and that opened up our inside game,” commented Hornet head coach Joel Hall on the outcome of the game. “Katahdin also was in foul trouble for most of the game trying to defend our big men inside and the quickness of our guards out front.”
The Hornets boast three players who have an average of 10 rebounds a game, and a pool of six players who consistently shoot into the double-digits.
In the Katahdin match, Jeremy Tarr notched the team-high of 19 points. Lucas Belanger plowed up 14 points, and Cote totaled 11 points.
The Ashland girls stopped Southern Aroostook’s attempts to acclimate to the Hornet basketball court, and played for their 12th win, 66-48, on Wednesday night.
Center Chasse scored the game-high 27 points, and palmed the ball for 12 rebounds. Flint claimed 10 rebounds and shot for 10 points. Suzie Poulin aimed in 10 more points for the Hornets.
The Ashland girls played their preliminary game yesterday against Hodgdon. No scores were reported at press time. The Ashland boys will meet their preliminary draw, Jonesport-Beals, at the Presque Isle High School gym at 4 p.m today.
