Yesterday, the Lady Hawks traveled to Presque Isle High School to face host No. 4 Ashland for the right to advance to the Class D quarterfinal game at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18 in the Bangor Auditorium against the winner of GHCA/Shead.
On Friday night, the Lady Hawks picked up a 45-39 win over host Madawaska.
Hodgdon coach Olin Quint said his troops came out strong taking a 14-7 lead behind Shannon Martin’s six points, but the Owls narrowed the scoring gap to 24-23 at intermission. But, in the third, the Lady Hawks outscored Madawaska, 14-6 to build their lead to 38-29.
“We were able to play our uptempo game,” said Quint. “We caused them to turn the ball over 16 times off our press. The seniors stepped up big in this win, and because of foul trouble, we also had our bench players chip in with 14 points, which was huge.”
But, the Owls made the going tough in a decisive final period, as they closed to within two points, but Hodgdon’s Sam Carpenter drained a 3-pointer and Martin connected on two clutch free throws to lift their team to victory.
Martin finished the game with 12 points, four steals and caused six turnovers. Taylor Quint had five assists in the contest.
Last Wednesday was Senior Night at Hodgdon, and it was an emotional time.
“This was a tough game for me,” he said. “I watched my five seniors since Peewee basketball.”
The Lady Hawks were playing the Central Aroostook Panthers for the second time within about a week, as in the teams’ first meeting, the Lady Panthers won, 65-35. But, the game was much closer at Hodgdon with Central Aroostook escaping with a 35-26 victory.
The Lady Panthers led 12-5 to open the game behind Kayla Day, Alex Dame and Sarah Long’s four points apiece. The Lady Hawks pulled to within four points, 18-14, behind Carpenter’s 3-pointer at the buzzer.
“In the locker room at halftime, we decided to change our defense,” said Quint. “We switched to man-to-man.”
In the third period, the Lady Panthers led by seven, 29-22, after outscoring Hodgdon 11-8 in the quarter. In the final period, Hodgdon pulled to within four, but that was as close as they would get, as Long went 3-for-5 from the line to seal the game.
Long led CAHS with 14 points, while Dame had 12 and Day added nine. For Hodgdon, Krystal Estabrook tallied eight points, six rebounds and caused seven turnovers.
“I was very proud of how the girls played, considering we lost by 27 points four days before,” said Quint. “Another thing is that they had only three girls scoring.”
