Houlton High School Winter Carnival highlights busy week for students, staff

HOULTON, Maine — Students at Houlton High School enjoyed a busy week of activities to celebrate Winter Carnival. The week concluded with a series of games and activities in the school gymnasium Friday. March 12. Throughout the week students earned points for their classes by participating in “Theme Days,” such as  “Dress Like a Twin Day,” “Dress Like a Celebrity Day,” “Class Colors Day.”
“Most classes had very high participation in all of these events,” said Heather Fagant, a teacher at HHS.
The junior class won the Winter Carnival, which culminated with the crowning of the school’s King and Queen — Ben Flewelling and Taylor Lindsay of the junior class. The point totals were: juniors, 7,500; seniors, 6,525; sophomores, 5,225; and freshmen, 4,925.
Throughout the week students collected items for charity as part of the competition to earn points for their classes. More than 200 items were collected for care packages for the troops and about 300 items were collected to send to the Animal Shelter.
Also, more than $200 was sent to the Red Cross for Haiti Earthquake Relief and thousands of servings of food were donated to the St. Mary’s food pantry.
A Battle of the Bands was held Thursday, March 11 to a sold-out crowd. First place went to the junior class band, which featured Wyatt Jenkins, Dylan Gard, Tyler Swimm, Tanner Caron and Taylor Bailey. The sophomore band placed second followed by the seniors and freshmen.
