History of apples in Maine

ORIENT, Maine —The Woodie Wheaton Land Trust will host pomologist John Bunker of Palermo on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. at its building in Forest City. Bunker will discuss the history of apples in the state and their importance to self-sufficient farms that were once common across.

The following morning, Sunday, Sept. 12, from roughly 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the group will meet at the Land Trust building in Forest City, and travel to Orient, Weston, and Brookton touring the old orchards. Bunker has been identifying, grafting, and cultivating rare apple varieties on his farm in Palermo for over 40 years.

Participants should pack a lunch. Donations are accepted and appreciated. To pre-register call 448-3250.
