Image  Frieda Rose Monson passed away on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at South Peninsula Hospital after a brief bout with pneumonia. She had been living at L/V Ark in Homer for the past couple of years.
Mrs. Monson was born on Aug. 20, 1924, in Wade, Maine. She moved to Fort Yukon in July 1967, with her husband, Albert, who worked for the Civil Service, and their two youngest children. Frieda was a very good gardener and while in Fort Yukon had a huge garden, which was often photographed by visiting tourists.
Frieda and Albert lived in Fort Yukon until 1973, when they moved to Ninilchik and built a log home complete with a custom rock fireplace built by their sons.
Again, Frieda created a big garden with lovely flowerbeds, winning many awards and ribbons at the local fair each fall.
Frieda was a wonderful cook and was into canning her garden foods as well as king crab and salmon. She had many different ways of preparing king crab, all of them delicious. Her twin sons Roland and Rellan spent two weeks with them one summer and had king crab for every meal. She and Albert had a boat and she loved fishing, usually catching the biggest fish on any of the many fishing excursions they made with family and friends.
Frieda is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Roland and Sandy Monson of Hudson, N.H., Rellan and Sue Monson of Chatham, Mass., and Roger and Each "Petcharat" Monson of Anchorage; daughter, Ruth Hall of Homer; grandchildren, Alicia Hall of Homer, Albert Monson of Anchorage, Francine Kazenoff of Fairbanks, Derek Monson and Megan Armstrong of Windham, N.H., and Todd Monson of Chatham, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Tierra Kazenoff of Fairbanks and Jack and Paul Armstrong and Avery Monson, all of Windham, N.H.
The family extends a special thanks to Frieda's caregivers during her stay at L/V Ark and to the wonderful staff at South Peninsula Hospital for the great care and thoughtfulness they showered upon her over the years.
Frieda was a very spirited person and will be greatly missed.
