During the week of June 28 to July 4, Scouts and leaders of Troop 177 traveled to Katahdin Scout Reservation in East Eddington for a fun-filled week of advancement and friendship. During the week the boys worked on several merit badges, rank advancement and conservation projects as well as renewing old friendships and making new ones.
During the week the troop also earned the “Honor Troop” award as they completed several rigorous requirements and took part in daily competitive events. A friendly face, David Roy, originally of Washburn and a former Troop 177 member, who is on the camp staff again this year, was welcomed along with his guitar at the troop campfires at the site.
Keagan Page was crowned King Neptune for the second year running as he competed along with representatives of each troop for the rights to be seated next to the queen during Friday afternoon activities of inter-troop competition at the water front.
On Wednesday evening the boys cooked at the site preparing a delicious Dutch-oven meal of “Chicken Thing,” sparkling potatoes and apple blueberry cobbler.
Also on Thursday evening, Brandon Cropley and Leader Randy Thompson completed the Mile Swim by spending 90 minutes in the water swimming a mile to earn this recognition. Randy was in for support of Brandon but earned the recognition as well. On Saturday on the way home the troop made their annual visit to the Cole’s Museum and was met by Mr. Galen Cole and his guests from Germany who were there for the 4th of July parade in Bangor.
After a brief presentation by Mr. Cole, the boys toured the museum, then headed home, completing their week of camp Scouting.
Summer Camp is not just for Boy Scouts any more, and leaders from Washburn found a week at camp was rewarding as they provided leadership to their troop as well as renewing old acquaintances of other Scout leaders in the camp. Washburn leaders provided support to the camp ranger during the week by rebuilding the handicapped ramp at the old dining hall as well as assisting with conservation projects at the troop’s campsite. Although it was a week’s vacation spent with the boys, it was a rewarding week and a time to watch the troop grow and work together as a team. Along with the occasional afternoon siestas, the leaders enjoyed their stay at camp. For their extra efforts, each one earned the Commissioners Award for service to the camp.

TOPS hold their regular meetings each Monday at the Washburn Trailrunners clubhouse, starting with weigh-in at 4:15 p.m. and a meeting to follow from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and new members are always welcome.
The Washburn Soup Kitchen schedule includes regular meals on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, served from 3 to 5 p.m. The kitchen also does up food boxes during regular hours and a special senior citizens’ meal is served the second Friday of each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Salmon Brook Historical Society museum summer hours are Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., and Wednesdays from 8 to 11 a.m. To arrange for tours at other times, please call 455-8279.
The Washburn Beaver’s ATV Club will be holding their next meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Gould Street clubhouse.

The library’s summer reading program will be ongoing through Friday, Aug. 7, and registration forms and time sheets can be picked up at the library. The library summer programs are held Tuesdays through Aug. 4. Grades 5 to 8 will have the time between 12:30 a.m. and noon, with grades K-4 will enjoying their time from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
On Wednesday, July 29, there will be K-2 basketball from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. and grades 3-4 will have the courts from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with grades 5-8 playing from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
There will be a major league playoff at 5:30 p.m. and there will be T-ball from 6 to 6:45 p.m.
On Thursday, July 30, the soccer teams will take to the fields, with grades K-2 will play from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., grades 3-4 playing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 5-8 will play from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Also on Thursday, July 30, there will be arts and crafts held at the Rec Center with classes for grades 5-8 being held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades K-4 will go from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.
On Friday, July 31, there will be a special End-of-the-Season Barbecue at the elementary school from 10 to 11:30 a.m. This will be for all the youth who participated this summer in the recreation programs and there will be some water-related games.
There will also be a major league championship game held on Friday, July 31, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Included in the various activities of the weekend are several non-profit fund-raising events. The Senior Class of 2010 is beginning fund-raising efforts for their class trip, Project Graduation activities and their senior prom. On Friday, Aug. 14 and Saturday, Aug. 15, they will be having a yard sale at the Swimm residence at 1236 Main St. Anyone wishing further information may phone class advisor Tracy Reed at 455-4886.
The Washburn Soup Kitchen will be selling some delicious strawberry shortcakes in the municipal parking lot. There will also be a donation spot for non-perishable items.
The members of Washburn’s TOPS program will be selling goodie baskets in the town park, and one American Legion post will be selling food in the town park on Saturday, Aug. 15, morning hours only. The Washburn Women’s Group will be selling dough boys at the municipal parking lot on Saturday, Aug. 15, and Washburn’s American Legion post will also be selling waffles in the town park on Saturday, Aug. 15, and the Caribou Post of the American Legion will be selling funnel cakes and other items on Saturday, Aug. 15, at the municipal parking lot.
The Caribou Knight’s of Columbus will be selling burgers and hotdogs at the municipal parking lot. The ladies of the United Methodist Church will be holding their famous pie sale in the town park on Friday evening, Aug. 14.
On Friday, Aug. 14, there will be a free hotdog roast at the bank parking lot starting at 11 a.m.
There will be a really big breakfast held at the Washburn Trail Runners clubhouse on Station Road on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 6 to 9:30 a.m.
The Washburn Fire Department will be serving their full-course barbecue chicken dinner at the firehouse starting at 11:30 a.m.
The Washburn Rotary will be holding their annual Rubber Ducky 50/50 Derby starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, and the launch point is the Mill Pond Foot Bridge. Proceeds will benefit the Mill Pond Project.
On Saturday, Aug. 15, there will be a horseshoe tournament held at Thomas Brewer Park. This event is sponsored by Washburn Boy Scout Troop 177, and the time will be announced next week.
The Washburn Rotary will be hosting the Saturday night bean supper from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Civic Center.
The Washburn Ministerial Association will be showing a movie at the fire department bays starting at 7:30 p.m.
The fireworks will be starting at 9:30 p.m. on the hill behind the high school, with the rain date on Sunday, same time, same place.
On Sunday, Aug. 16, the Perham Ladies Group will be holding a brunch at the Civic Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Salmon Brook Historical Society Museum hours are on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Aug. 16, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Musical events for the festival weekend include: a concert in the Town Park provided by the Aroostook County Blue Grass Band on Friday, Aug. 14, starting at 6:30 p.m., with rain location at the elementary school cafeteria, and on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
There will be musical entertainment by Randy Michaud at Story Park, with a rain location at the high school gym. And there may also be an additional band set up on Friday evening in the bank parking lot; details will be forthcoming.
On Saturday afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30, there will be a country music jam with Paul Clayton and Friends held at the old health center parking lot. The rain location will be at the high school gym and at both places there will be lots of room for dancing.
On Saturday evening from 6:30 to 9:30, the musical group Sound Friendship will be performing at Story Park. The rain location will be at the high school gym and proceeds from donations will go to benefit the Washburn Soup Kitchen.
The annual Gospel Concert will be held at the high school gym from 2 to 4 p.m. and will feature lots of Washburn’s fine local talent.
Be advised that Main Street will be closed Friday, Aug. 14, from 4:45 to 10:30 p.m., as well as all day on Saturday, Aug. 15, with the detour being the truck route by way of Victoria Ave.
Restrooms will be located at the firehouse, historical museum, both Washburn schools, Gould Street and behind the post office.
