UScellular extends commitment to help youth stay connected

After donating more than $742,000 in wireless hotspots and connectivity to nonprofit organizations in Maine since 2021, UScellular is extending its pledge to help connect youth in 2023. Nationally, the company is committing up to $13 million in additional funding to address the "homework gap" among youth who lack access to reliable internet outside the classroom in the United States.

Construction begins on former StarDust Motel

It has taken a bit longer than anticipated, but remodeling work is now underway at the former StarDust Motel on U.S. Route 1. Purchased by the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians in late 2021, remodeling work was delayed when bids for the project came in higher than anticipated. Remodeling work officially began Wednesday, April, 29 on the property.

Martin honored as NMCC Student of the Year

Seven Maine community college students were honored for their academic success and campus and community involvement at a luncheon ceremony on Wednesday, April 26 at Maple Hill Farm in Hallowell. During this event, Northern Maine Community College recognized graduating senior Owen Martin of Caribou as the 2023 NMCC Student of the Year.

Katahdin Trust Company will once again be the Major Corporate Sponsor for the 39th annual Jefferson Cary Foundation, Cary Classic Benefit Golf Tournament at the Caribou Country Club. The one-day tournament will feature five men’s divisions this year with an added Seniors Division, and two ladies divisions, and will be held on Saturday, July 8. Rain date is Sunday, July 9.

Aroostook County-based MMG Insurance’s gift to Acadia For All Campaign supports behavioral health needs in The County

Recognizing the statewide reach of Northern Light Acadia Hospital, MMG Insurance has committed $25,000 to the Acadia For All campaign. MMG’s gift will provide patient assistance funds for Aroostook County residents receiving treatment from Acadia Hospital and aid in the construction of a new 50 bed pediatric inpatient wing at the hospital.

Aroostook Savings & Loan names new president and CEO

Aroostook Savings & Loan Board of Directors has announced Curt Paterson as their new president and CEO, succeeding the late John S. Swanberg who passed away last December. Vicki Keaton, vice president of operations will continue to serve as interim president until Paterson assumes his new role effective May 15.

Cary to celebrate National Hospital Week

Cary Medical Center will join some 5,000 hospitals around the country in celebration of National Hospital Week May 7-13. The week will feature a number of activities, including the launching of the 100 Miles in 100 Days Healthy You Fitness Challenge. This has been a very popular activity in recent years and helps to promote physical activity.
