Armand Martin, a 104-year-old World War II veteran and 80-year-member of the American Legion, was among five Army veterans honored for their service at Country Village Estates in Madawaska on Jan. 15.
The building was originally slated to open in 2022, then after multiple construction delays it was supposed to be done in late 2023. Now it’s been pushed into 2024.

On Saturday morning, members of the Aroostook County Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol laid 400 wreaths for veterans at Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Caribou. Later that day, the cadets did the same for 270 veterans at Fairmount Cemetery in Presque Isle. The squadron will also send around 40 to 50 wreaths to Togus National Cemetery in Augusta.
Lorna Harris and her husband Scott Harris of Patten have been part of the national convoy for more than a decade and this year they will be helping to transport other Gold Star families to the national cemetery for the laying of wreaths on all the graves on Saturday.
The decline of veterans organizations is not exclusive to Aroostook. Nationally, the VFW went from a record 1.2 million members in 1992 to just over 1 million last year.
