I’d like to take a minute to talk to you about two legged critters for a change. We all know I love and adore the four legged members of our family, but it takes the human heart to swell with kindness and compassion when they see an animal struggling or suffering, and those are the hearts I am surrounded by.
I had to get my calculator out because I didn’t believe my fingers after counting several times. Yes, it’s been 32 years that I’ve been talking to you about animal welfare and rescue, and for the one or two of you still reading, thank you so much!
As I’m sure you’ve heard, Houlton Humane Society has been blessed recently, having been awarded two $10,000 grants for spaying and neutering programs.

Shelters and rescues are full, with over 100 cats in residence at Houlton Humane, Ark Animal Sanctuary and out in foster.
“There is nothing to do around here,” I hear all the time. And I chuckle.
Driving in to town this morning, the radio host was commenting on her son’s dog, her “grand-dog,” and how much she enjoys it when he visits but also how much cost is involved with pet ownership.
Ah, life at an animal shelter, such a treat, seriously, I remember the days way back when, and we are talking 30 years ago now, when I quit my job and went to work at the shelter.
