Kevin Collins scored the 1,000th point of his career in the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s 80-72 victory over Fisher College Sunday in Boston.

UMPI improved to 4-5 as Collins, who needed just four points to reach the milestone, notched 28. The senior from Fort Washington, Maryland, netted six of his 11 3-point attempts. Ronkevis Clardy scored 13 points and collected three assists and Anthony Chacho had 11 points and 10 assists.

The Owls led by as many as 18 points before Fisher made up some ground over the final four minutes.

The previous afternoon, the Pine Manor College Gators of Newton, Massachusetts, defeated UMPI, 77-69, avenging an early-season loss.

Pine Manor never trailed, although Chacho’s 3-pointer with six minutes to play tied the score at 59. The Gators quickly retook the lead and hit some late free throws to come out on top.

Collins had 23 points and seven rebounds and Chacho put in 17 points and had five boards. Freshman Luke Peterson came off the bench to score 10 for the Owls.

On Dec. 5, Collins scored 18 points and hauled in six boards in a 75-55 loss to Div. I University of Maine at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The Owls now have nearly three weeks between games as they don’t return to action until Dec. 29 with a matchup against the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. They follow that up with a game against Connecticut College, also in New London.

The UMPI women’s record fell to 0-7 as they were beaten in a road contest by UM-Farmington Sunday, 57-51.

The Owls led in the early stages of the third quarter before a 13-5 run by the Beavers put them on top for good. UMPI trailed by nine points before Rhylee Wright scored 11 points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, helping her Owls get back to within two points at 50-48. They were unable to get any closer the rest of the way.

Wright finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Kendra Silvers (10 points and five rebounds) and Emilia Churchill (eight points and six rebounds) were UMPI’s other statistical leaders.

UMPI lost to Thomas College last Wednesday in Waterville, 85-48. Brianna Losee’s 12 points were tops for the Owls.

UMPI is now off until after the new year. The team’s schedule resumes Jan. 6 with a home game against the University of New Brunswick-St. John.
