From the Bunkers – Week of June 24, 2019

NEW LIMERICK, Maine — Summer officially broke this past week. And with it we got our first 80 degree day. Also with it came a couple of rainy nights that helped soak the course. Things are coming together rapidly now. Our grounds crew is toiling everyday to make Houlton Golf Course the best it can be. Visitors are commenting positively on the conditions.

Junior golf clinic will begin tomorrow at the clubhouse. The youth will be assessed by age and abilities into classes. Once again David Grant and Bruce Nason will lead the instruction. Students will be on the range and also on the course as they progress in their lessons on Monday mornings. Please respect their time as they will be our future players and members. The Men’s Twilight League will continue Monday afternoon. It’s still early, but several teams are in a tight fight. The Ladies Association will play on Tuesday. If you would like to join them, give the clubhouse at call at 532-2662 for more information.

Coming up on Saturday, July 6, will be the annual Houlton High School Alumni Association nine hole four person scramble. Sign up a team or enter as a single and we will put you on a team. Shotgun start at 9 a.m. Coming in early August will be the County Open 18-hole individual stroke play event on Saturday at Houlton, followed by the Gala at Houlton. On Sunday, VaJoWa Golf Course will host an 18-hole four person scramble. All events benefit the Houlton Regional Hospital Foundation. Call the courses to sign up.

The Lakeside Restaurant is open to all. They are serving up tasty meals at a reasonable cost, offering wonderful flavor at a great value. Call Nancy at 694-9494 to reserve your table. With summer here and schools out, our seasonal visitors will be here just waiting to enjoy the ambience of the Lakeside Restaurant.

There is still time to join the Houlton Community Golf Course. If you have not been a member in the 2017 or 2018 season, you are eligible to join at half price for the rest of the season. This comes with all the advantages, reduced rates for golf carts and range tokens and also membership in North Atlantic Golf Course Association. You get to play two rounds at member clubs for just the price of power cart rental. I was asked to include a list of the clubs, but there are too many for here. Please check out our website, houltongolf.com, to see the complete list.

Weather will be mostly in the 70s this week. Our crew will be hard at work fine tuning the course conditions. We hope you will find them to your liking. Come and enjoy a round or if time is tight, just play nine. I hope to see you on the course.

Houlton Community Golf Course is located on 6 Country Club Drive in New Limerick. For more information on the course call 532-2662, email houltongolf@gmail.com or visit their website www.houltongolf.com.
