Presque Isle Housing Authority to host Tasty Options Market Aug. 15

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Housing Authority, in conjunction with their summer activities program, will host a hybrid local market for their residents from 5 to 6 p.m. today, Thursday, Aug. 15, at their 58 Birch St. office.

The market aims to combat food insecurity in public housing, and hopes to do so with a partnership between the Housing Authority, SNAP-Ed and the Presque Isle Farmers Market.

Through the Tasty Options Market, Presque Isle Housing Authority and their partners hope to shed light on the SNAP Maine Harvest Bucks program, along with the benefits associated with purchasing healthy, local produce and keeping residents’ money in the community.

The market will feature representatives from the Presque Isle Farmers Market, the SNAP-Ed program and the SNAP purchase coordinator in order to answer questions. Through the market, the housing authority wants to ensure that residents understand what opportunities exist to promote access to tasty, healthy food options in Aroostook County.

“Presque Isle Housing Authority has been working hard to bring programs and activities on site to our residents. One of the goals this year was to promote healthy eating,” said Laurie Amero, executive assistant at the organization.

“With the help of SNAP-Ed, the Presque Isle Farmers’ Market, and seasonal produce from local farmers, we are pleased to offer the Tasty Options Market, which allows families to choose items, learn about healthy recipes and how to use Maine Harvest Bucks at the local farmers market locations,” Amero said.
