Cold but beautiful weather welcomed athletes from around the state to the 37th annual Maine Special Olympics Winter Games held at Sugarloaf, U.S.A Jan. 28-30 and the team from the CAARC in Presque Isle brought home a plethora of gold.
In the 100-meter Nordic race, John Robertson, Beth Flannery, R.J. Wilcox and Steve Michaud took gold medals, Laurie Coffin brought home the bronze and Sarah Knowles earned a fourth-place ribbon.
In addition, Robertson earned his second gold medal of the games and Knowles earned a bronze in the 500-meter Nordic ski race.
Accompanying the team were Sgt. Joey Seeley of the Presque Isle Police Department and “Fireman” Fred Parsons of the Presque Isle Fire Department.
In a lighter moment, Parsons was asked to sing the National Anthem, but before taking the microphone, learned that the CD player had frozen up. However, he rolled with the punches and pulled off the song without a hitch.
