AUGUSTA, Maine – Rep. Patricia Sutherland, D-Chapman, is co-sponsoring legislation to help boost post-secondary education among Maine students.

The bill, LD 1040, would require high school students to complete at least one application to a post-secondary institution prior to graduating. The legislation is designed to show high school students that their educational options extend beyond graduation.
“It is my hope that more high school students will seize these opportunities and gain further qualifications that will make them more competitive in today’s work force,” said Sutherland.
The bill is sponsored by House Speaker Glenn Cummings. Cummings was thankful for Sutherland’s support of the bill.
“Pat Sutherland has been a great advocate for this legislation,” said Cummings. “She understands how this bill can help our Maine students attain higher goals and be more competitive in today’s global economy.”
The bill has been sent to the Legislature’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee. The Committee is expected to hold a public hearing on the bill in the coming weeks.
