WASHBURN, Maine – Washburn District High School kept with tradition this year in choosing the recipient of the Fan of the Year Award. Fred Woodman took home a lifetime pass to all WDHS events, a duck hunter’s camouflage cap from R&S Guide Service, a deck of cards and a cribbage board and the Fan of the Year sweatshirt.
The award is chosen annually by the basketball coaching staff at WDHS and because only one person is honored each year, an individual can be under consideration for many years as is the case with Woodman. Part of a group that has faithfully followed the Beavers for many seasons, he can be found at junior high and senior high games alike.
Though health and slippery parking lots hampered his attendance this year, Woodman shows a zeal for the game that is a testament to his love for his town. Woodman is always knowledgeable about Washburn teams and gives encouragement to the coaches and players when he sees them in the community, which, like past winners, puts him in a class with the best basketball fans anywhere.
Woodman and his wife Ruth were both honored at a late-season game.
