Coyote contest winner
The New Shoppe in Ashland held its first annual Biggest Coyote Contest. The contest ran from Jan. 1 through Feb. 28. Out of 50 plus coyotes that were brought in, Doug Chasse, of Ashland, shot the biggest weighing 45 pounds.
For the biggest coyote he was presented a new Savage .22-250 rifle with scope by Bob Burroughs, the proprietor of The New Shoppe. The New Shoppe wants to thank everyone who participated in the contest and hopes to see you next year.
2007 Project Graduation events
March 30 – The Mr. Ashland Pageant will be held at the Ashland Central School gym at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door. There will be six contestants and sure to be lots of fun. Come and join in on the fun.
April 7 – Bake sale at the Food Mart in Ashland from 9 a.m. to whenever. Lots of goodies.
May 26 – Blue Grass Concert: The Misty Mountaineers and The County Blue Grass Band will be performing at the Ashland High School from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission will be $10 per person ages 12 and over. Under 12 will be free. Everyone is welcome and again sure to be lots of fun.
2007 Project Graduation is trying to raise monies to take the senior class on a trip to Six Flags in Massachusetts for the weekend of graduation. Please come and help support Project Grad. Church supper
The Ashland Union Congregational Church will be holding its annual Old Fashioned Supper on Saturday, March 31, at 6 p.m. Live music will be provided by Larry Park and Friends. Supper will consist of baked ham, turkey and all the fixings and desert. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling Jean at 435-6638.
Ongoing events
The Ashland Area Senior Citizens Group meets every Thursday at 12 noon for a potluck lunch and meeting. Everyone is invited to attend weekly. This week the group will hold an auction.
The Portage Lake Seniors’ Lunch is held on the last Tuesday of every month at 11 a.m. All seniors are invited, the meal is a potluck so bring your own dish or bring a cash donation. For more information contact Wilza Robertson at 435-6211 or Grace Nason at 435-6373.
The Red Hat Loonies of Portage Lake meet the second Thursday of every month at Dean’s Motor Lodge. Membership dues are $2. Come have a great time and meal. For more information contact Rachel Stevens at 435-6358.
An infant to pre-K play group meets every Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Ashland Rec Center. For more information call Andrea White at 435-6363
Starting in March and meeting every Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. in the gym at the Portage Lake Municipal Building will be a children’s play group. If you would like to attend with your children call Taunja Jandreau at 435-8277.

Ladies, are you interested in crafts? Or maybe you have some you’ve started and not yet finished? Every Thursday evening at the Portage Lake Municipal Building is Girlz Night starting at 6:30 p.m. Bring those crafts you’ve been neglecting and enjoy the company.
Co-ed volleyball is under way once again. Open (and free) to anyone who would like to participate. It will be held on every Thursday evening starting at 6:30 p.m. and lasting until approximately 8:30 p.m. in the Portage Lake Municipal Building gym. Please do not wear street shoes while playing.
