Presque Isle names Athlete of the Week
The Varsity Club and Big Cheese Pizza are pleased to congratulate Dan McCue and Katie Buob for being selected as athletes of the week for the week of March 25-31.
Dan’s leadership, good attitude, work ethic and guidance of the younger players have been important to the varsity baseball team’s early spring practices and workouts.
Katie has become a leader on the track and field team. Her leadership during drills and workouts have earned her respect from both teammates and coaches.
Student-athletes chosen as athletes of the week receive a one-item large pizza courtesy of Big Cheese Pizza.
Junior Golf Clinic
The final day for the Junior Golf Clinic at the Fort Fairfield Community Center will be Wednesday, April 11. Those attending the clinic will be using newly purchased golf equipment, from golf clubs, to hitting nets, to a nine-hole putting course.

Soap Box Derby spring rally
There will be a Soap Box Derby Spring Rally on May 12-13 at Houlton’s Derby Hill in Community Park. For more information or to register, call Chris Holmes at 532-9889.
The Northern Maine Soap Box Derby Committee is currently accepting registrations for the 12th annual Northern Maine Soap Box Derby Race. The race is set for Saturday, June 16 at Derby Hill in Houlton’s Community Park.
Youth between the ages of 8-16 years are encouraged to participate in this fun family event. To register, call the Houlton Parks and Recreation Department at 532-1310 and registration material will be sent through the mail.
Also, the committee is still looking for Soap Box Derby cars that are not being used. Call the recreation department if there is any problem finding a driver for a car.
Washburn native gets silver medal in Sambo Championship
James Chico Hernandez, 53, of Washburn, won the silver medal in the Vets Division at the 2007 British Sambo Championship held March 24 at the Swallow Leisure Center in Sittingbourne.
Hernandez competed in the Open Class (no weight class), defeating Oktam of Uzbekistan 1-0 in the quarterfinals. He defeated returning silver medalist Graham Mann of Norfolk, England by total victory in the semi-finals.
Hernandez was leading 8-0 before he slammed his opponent to his back while remaining standing for total victory. In 40-plus lifetime Sambo fights and competitions; it was Hernandez’s first time ever winning a Sambo match by total victory.
Hernandez was defeated by World Sambo Medalist Darren Richardson, of Portsmouth, England 2-0 in the finals.
This is Hernandez’s third time capturing the British Silver, with silver wins in 2004 and 2005. He represented Team Irish of Bangor and the American Sambo Association.
Ten Star All Star Basketball Camp
Registration is now open for the 10 Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp. The camp is by invitation only. Boys and girls ages 10-19 are eligible to apply. Past participants include:Michael Jordan and Tim Duncan. Players from 50 states and 17 foreign countries attended the 2006 camp. College basketball scholarships are possible for players selected to the All-American Team. There is also a summer camp available for boys and girls ages 6-18 of all skill levels.
