Mrs. Kelley’s fourth-grade class at Eva Hoyt Zippel Elementary School celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday in a very special way. As part of a reading unit that the students took part in, they all studied the profession and books of Dr. Seuss.
They began by learning about Dr. Seuss as a person, his life and the things, people and events in his life that inspired his writing.
Next, they studied his work and took a close look at the characters in his books, his ability to rhyme and the life lessons that some of his books portrayed.
Finally, the students studied quatrains and after some practiced by creating their very own Dr. Seuss big books. They even signed their work under pseudonyms, just as Dr. Seuss did.
On Dr. Seuss’s birthday, Friday, March 2, the students took their finished big books, full of quatrains and lively characters, over to Mrs. Malenfant’s first-grade class at Pine Street Elementary School to share them with her students.
The big books are now being displayed outside of Mrs. Kelley’s classroom for two weeks and then will be donated to the children’s ward at The Aroostook Medical Center.
