Caribou High School recently hosted the 2007 Spring Special Olympics. Teams from all over the county traveled to the Viking track and field to compete in chilly and damp conditions. Though the weather may not have been cooperating, the athletes did not let that dull their spirit, as they gave their all throughout the day’s activities.
As is tradition for the Special Olympics, the event started off with all of the teams marching along the track, with some following banners that had their organization’s name and colors. After all the teams completed the lap around the track, they lined up in the field to listen to the National Anthem, performed by the Caribou High School chorus; and the Special Olympics torch was lit.
Special Olympians of all ages competed in the 50 meter dash, the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 50 meter walk, 100 meter walk, softball throw, standing long jump and the 50 meter wheelchair race.
Organizations and schools represented in the Special Olympics included: Adult Multiple Alternative Center; Caribou Learning Center; Community Living Association; Fort Fairfield Elementary; Fort Fairfield Middle/High School; Fort Kent Elementary School; Green Valley; Hodgdon Elementary School; Houlton South Side School; and two independent entries, one of which being Bradley’s.
