Maine Sports Legends announces scholarship winners

The Maine Sports Legends have honored two recent graduates of Aroostook County high schools with $500 scholarships.
Kelesi Bouchard of Fort Kent Community High School and Caleb Swanberg of Caribou High School are this year’s recipients of the Maine Sports Legends’ Scholar/Athlete Scholarships.
    The organization recognizes outstanding senior high school scholar-athletes from all over the state. Two students from each of the state’s four regions are selected by local committees to receive the award. The students chosen must demonstrate high achievement in the classroom, athleticism, leadership, character and community service.
Kelesi Bouchard, the daughter of James and Kathy Bouchard of Fort Kent, ranked sixth academically in a class of 88 students, holding a grade point average of 95.7. She lettered in varsity soccer, basketball and softball and was the team captain for soccer and basketball during her senior year. She was named to the Penobscot Valley Athletic Conference all-academic basketball team.
During her high school career, Bouchard was also a member of the National Honor Society, was president of the student council, was a member of Key Club and the jazz and pep bands and was her school’s Maine Principal’s Award recipient.
For her community service, Bouchard has volunteered as a soccer coach at youth camp, the Special Olympics and Toys For Tots.
Caleb Swanberg, the son of John and Andrea Swanberg of Caribou, was the salutatorian at Caribou High School, ranked second in a class consisting of 120 students with a grade point average of 99.0.
He lettered all four years in varsity soccer, alpine and Nordic skiing and track and field, serving as the team captain in skiing as a senior. He was named to the Maine Soccer Coaches All-East soccer team, the Penobscot Valley Conference all-conference track team and was runner-up in the Class B state skimeister competition this past season. Last fall, he  won the Eastern Region Adidas Soccer Scholar Athlete Award.
Swanberg, the Maine Principal’s Award representative at CHS, was a member of the National Honor Society and the Math Team. He was a student council member, serving as president his senior year. He also was a member of the concert and jazz bands, earning the Outstanding Musicianship Award at the Maine State Jazz Festival and was named one of five Outstanding Maine Musicians in Jazz.
He was a national finalist for the Milk Mustache Scholar-Athlete program.
Swanberg volunteered at the Caribou High School ski facility, was an assistant coach of the Caribou Middle School ski team, coached Mini-Viking soccer andbuilt doorways and kennels for Pet Rescue.
