Family biathlon event planned for July 28

An opportunity to become a community biathlete for a day is coming soon to central Aroostook County.
The Nordic Heritage Sports Club is hosting a night of mild exercise, shooting and fun on Saturday, July 28 beginning at 4 p.m. at the Nordic Heritage Center, located on the Fort Fairfield Road in Presque Isle.
Participants can choose to either walk-and-shoot, or run-and-shoot, for a score. A barbecue and bonfire will follow.
Range and rifle safety education begins at 4 p.m. Staff from the Maine Winter Sports Center will offer instruction and equipment for shooting on the 50-meter range.
At 5 p.m., the run-and-shoot event takes place. Participants will run a three-kilometer course and take aim at the range (1K run, shoot, 1K run, shoot, 1K run). At 5:30 p.m., the walk-and-shoot contest will begin for those interested in trying the sport beginning with a half-kilometer walk.
Children can participate in a fun event following the competitions.
A barbecue will follow at approximately 6 p.m. for all participants, families and spectators. There is a race fee of $12, or $10 for NHSC members. Tickets for the barbecue are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Hot dogs, hamburgers, cold salads, drinks and desserts are included.
