It was a busy week with mixed results for the Presque Isle Patriots’ American Legion baseball team.
Presque Isle played six games in a five-day stretch, capping things off with a win and a loss in a split doubleheader Sunday.
The Patriots defeated Hampden, 13-8, thanks to a 17-hit attack. PI scored eight of its runs over the first three innings and held on.
Harry Austin paced the winning offense with a five-hit game, including a homer and a double. Tom Desjardins and Pat Thibodeau both had three hits for Presque Isle.
Matt Enman went the first eight innings on the mound, holding the opponents to just two runs over the first six innings before the host Riverdogs put six runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Hunter Caron pitched a scoreless ninth.
Also that day, the Patriots took on Bangor and dropped a 17-5 decision. Presque Isle scored two runs in the top of the first, but the home team answered with seven in its half and never looked back.
Mike Cleary blasted a two-run homer and also singled for Presque Isle, with Thibodeau singling three times.
On Saturday, PI dropped both ends of a doubleheader to top-seeded Waldo, losing 9-8 in the opener and 10-2 in the nightcap.
Presque Isle nearly came back after trailing 9-0 after three innings, putting six runs on the board in the fourth and two more in the fifth, but the Patriots were blanked the rest of the way. Tyler Lamoureux, relieving starter Andrew York, threw three innings of shutout ball to help keep PI in contention. Thibodeau, Cleary and Devin Hersey had two hits apiece for the Patriots.
In the second game of the afternoon, Waldo again had a fast start by scoring all its runs in the first three frames. This time, Presque Isle had no answer and was soundly defeated. Thibodeau took the loss on the mound, with Desjardins collecting two of the Patriots’ five hits.
Presque Isle downed Lincoln last Tuesday, 17-7, before winning its only home contest of the week Thursday, over Orono, 11-7.
The Patriots, now 9-8, played at the Winkin Complex on the Husson College campus in Bangor Tuesday, taking on Motor City. The next game is a home game Thursday against Lincoln beginning at 7 p.m. at the James E. Dyer Field behind Presque Isle High School.
