PRESQUE ISLE – Eric Waddell, principal of Presque Isle High School, has nominated senior Courtney Hoffses to compete in the national Principal’s Leadership Award (PLA) scholarship program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Herff Jones, Inc. funds the PLA program. The nomination places Hoffses in the national competition. One hundred national PLA winners will be chosen this spring to receive a college scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $12,000.
“Courtney has demonstrated her leadership skills throughout her high school career,” said Waddell. “She is currently the senior class president. This will be a busy year for Courtney.”
High school principals from across the country were able to nominate one of their student leaders. Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. They were also required to write an essay.
In recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities, as well as academic performance, the PLA scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education. Co-curricular activities are an essential part of the school curriculum. While at PIHS, Hoffses has been a class president for two years. She has been a member of the school’s swim team, and during her junior year, she spent a semester in Washington, D.C. where she worked as a Congressional page. All these things are the makings of a well-rounded student.
NASSP, the preeminent school leadership organization, serves as the national voice for middle level and high school principals, assistant principals, and aspiring school leaders. NASSP promotes the intellectual growth, academic achievement, character development, leadership development, and physical well being of youth through its programs and student leadership services. NASSP administers the National Honor Society, the National Junior Honor Society and the National Association of Student Councils.
