Recreation changes

MAPLETON – Organized recreation programs for the Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill area could change in the future. Municipal staff and recreation facilitators invited citizens of these areas to take part in a survey that could affect whether or not the towns will expand their programs or keep to the same formula.     “For several years now, our recreation program has offered much of the same activities,” explained recreation director Troy Haines. “Now and again I’m asked what else there is to do after the summer program ends. I’ve also been approached with suggestions for other activities that our residents would like to see offered for families, adults and seniors.”
The recreation department currently offers swimming lesson, tennis lessons, swim team, recreational baseball (non-competitive), little league, community hours at the outdoor pool, soccer and arts and crafts during the summer months.
The department serves approximately 250 children with a budget of $52,000. Haines points out the expressed interest in facilitating programs all year by expanding current programs or adding new activities.
Haines and municipal officials would like to gather the opinion of the area taxpayers before taking any action.
Surveys are available at the town office. Residents may also contact Haines at 762-4881 or 551-1301. Opinions can also be emailed to troy.haines@maine.edu.
