Madigan, William W. "Bill" – 84, Caribou. ImageImageImageCARIBOU – William W. “Bill” Madigan, 84, passed away unexpectedly, December 15, 2007, at Caribou. He was born at Houlton, July 18, 1923, the son of the late James W. and Doris (Waterall) Madigan.
    Bill graduated from Houlton High School and he attended Ricker College until the war broke out. During WWII Bill served 3 years in the Pacific in the US Army, Company C, 594th Engineers Ship to Shore Regiment as a coxswain in charge of landing craft that transported troops for island invasions. He received numerous medals and awards for meritorious service. In his family’s eyes Bill truly earned and will always be regarded as a member of the greatest generation. Following the war he returned to northern Maine settling in Caribou where he worked hard for many years and raised his family, in who he took great pride.
    He was employed by  the Caribou Utilities District prior to his retirement. Throughout his life, Bill served as a problem-solver at the ready to fix broken equipment or to lend a hand in some other way. Bill was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church where he was also a communicant and was also a life member of the Lister-Knowlton Post #9389 VFW. During his last 14 years he was a volunteer at Cary Medical Center. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and friend who offered a helping hand wherever it was needed.
    Bill is survived by his wife Theresa of Caribou; his daughters, Susan Titcomb and her husband Gary of Bangor, Mary Umphrey and her husband Tom of Caribou, Doris “Dori” Michaud and her husband Randy of Augusta and Patricia Carter and her husband Terry of Standish;  sisters, Mary (Malee) Putnam, Lucia O’Brien and Ann Madigan-McGurl; a brother, Albert Madigan; and sisters-in-law, Mildred Madigan and Joyce Madigan; eight grandchildren, William and Kristi Titcomb, Erin and Nick Umphrey, Patrick and Michael Michaud and Jessica and Jennifer Carter; three great-grandchildren, Collin Umphrey, Carissa Michaud and Jack William Berry Michaud, who were all very special to him. He was predeceased by his brothers, Dr. John B. Madigan and James C. Madigan.
    Private family memorial services will be held at the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery.  Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Bill may do so through the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery or the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.  Envelopes may be obtained through the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou.
