TOPS 145
By Shirley Sides

The weekly meeting of TOPS 145 was held Feb. 6 at the Congregational Church vestry in Island Falls. We had 11 members weigh-in and 10 attended our meeting.
Our person who lost the most weight for the week was Gladie Corneil and runners-up were Annie Jane Smith and Hilda Clukey. Great job ladies.
Reports were given by our secretary and treasurer for the week.
Loretta Bouchard led the program for the week. Her topic was on losing 10 pounds in 10 days, and mini meals, six meals a day of mini meals lowers your weight, as to three large meals, a day. Some of our members had results of this. It was an interesting meeting with Hilda’s reading about being happy and taking time for friends … and of course we always have Riva’s joke.
Please feel welcome to our group of wonderful people. Every Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. weigh-ins and meeting starts at 9 a.m. Call 365-4884 for more information.

Houlton Council of Catholic Women
By Lois Downing

Houlton Council of Catholic Women met in the parish center at St. Mary of the Visitation Church on Monday, February 4 for its monthly meeting.
It was the time to pack Valentine bags, a yearly project, so the evening began with the packing of the bags. Members arrived laden down with fruit, candy, cookies, sweets and other goodies and all were added to the bags for the shutins.
At 6:45 President Betty Ann Childers called the meeting and the ladies said the pledge of allegiance, prayers and hymn.
Reports were given by Ethel Mersereau, and Bernette Roach. Lois Downing read two months’ correspondence and many thank you cards. Mention was made of the deaths of Doris Hissom and Ruth Leavitt, former members who had moved away.
Service sheets for the ladies to be filled out were distributed by Lois. Members are to record their services and return to Betty Ann.
Janet Barker was thanked for the Valentine bags, 27 in all. Those who could deliver bags took some and Rose Levesque delivered the remainder.
President reported that she, Lynnette Dobbs, Louise Guillette and Cruz-Cruz attended the state meeting in Hallowell recently. President said Houlton is always recognized at the meetings and it was a nice welcome. Lynnette gave a report of the meeting; she will be editor of the newsletter and said Cindy York was interviewed for a story as to why she is a member of Catholic Women’s Council.
Janet Barker thanked council for purchasing four books for the Religious Education library and the books were brought for display.
President asked Ethel Mersereau to introduce David Grant, speaker, who is Assistant Port Director for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. He spoke on the new document requirements needed for crossing the border. David gave each a tear sheet detailing acceptable documents. He said the transition stage began January 31, 2008 and border crossers now need to have photo ID and proof of citizenship.
Prayer intentions were asked from members and a Hail Mary was said in their honor.
Kathryn Fitzpatrick won the door prize. A collection for the Seminarian Fund was taken up.
The committee was Paula Callnan, Lois Cassidy, Blanche Cyr, Mary Grant, Mary Ann Marciniak, Rita McDade, Ethel Mersereau, Ethel Schools, Gail Schools, Shirley Smith and Linda Livorsi.

The Senior Citizens Club

The Senior Citizens Club of Sherman, Benedicta, Silver Ridge and Stacyville managed to attend their bi-monthly meeting as scheduled on Feb. 6 at 11:30 a.m. at the Sherman gym in spite of the stormy remains of snowfall from the previous night.
Only 11 folks braved the elements to report, on time, from points all around, bringing their potluck contributions of food in delicious variety.
Cards were signed to those who were ill, bereaved, missed or in the hospital. We hope they can rejoin us soon.
A lively few games of Bingo were played. There is nothing as rewarding as having a little fin on a mid-winter day plus a fine meal within a nice warm place.
This Wednesday was Ash Wednesday and this writer got her forehead marked with the sign of the cross in ashes at an evening church service.
Our next meeting will be held on Feb. 20. Easter comes early this year. Valentine’s Day is a week from today. Are you ready?
Present at the Feb. 6 meeting were: Fred and Annie Atkinson, Dean and Frances McKenney, Sam Guiggey, Margaret Duffy, Linniea Perry, Bonita Staples, Mary Lawler, Donna Grasse and Sandra Qualey.
