Athlete of the week
The Varsity Club and Big Cheese Pizza are pleased to congratulate Russ Mortland and Courtney Hoffses for being selected as athletes of the week for the week of Jan. 28 to Feb. 2. Mortland scored 31 points to lead the boys’ varsity basketball team to wins over Caribou and Mattanawcook.
Hoffses had four first place finishes to help the girls’ swim team defeat Caribou.
Baseball umpire clinics
The Northern Maine Board of Approved Baseball Umpires will begin holding clinics for new members beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
Interested individuals should meet in the lecture hall on the Northern Maine Community College campus at 6 p.m..
Cost of the clinic is $40.00, which includes the rule book. At the first meeting a day and time for future sessions will be determined to accommodate the group.
Those passing the board test and mechanics session will be eligible to begin working this spring at the middle school level.

Hockey tournament
The Presque Isle Atom youth hockey team will host a hockey tournament at the Forum from Friday, Feb. 22 to Sunday, Feb. 24.
Events will include games between the seven participating teams, and a Saturday evening National Hockey League skills competition.
Nordic Heritage Center announcements
On Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., the Maine Winter Sports Center and Mojo’s will host an adult ski clinic.
The clinic offers multiple instructors to cater to all levels of skiers. Free rentals are available for the program each evening. On Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. adults are invited to a group ski.

Maine Winter Sports Center announcements
The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department and the Northern Skiers Club will offer a Caribou winter carnival from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 16. For more information contact Mark Shea at mark@mainewsc.org.
As part of the take it outside program, Aroostook State Park will host a celebration of winter sports on Tuesday, Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $5 per person.
From now through March, ski free Wednesdays will be offered at Big Rock from 4 to 9 p.m. Evenings will include free skiing, a free half hour lesson and $10 rentals. For more information, visit www.bigrockmaine.com.
Mojo’s is organizing a mountain biking trip to Moab, U.T. from April 12 to 19. To reserve a spot, or for more information, call Melanie Stewart at 760-9500.
The following Mojo winter adventure clinics are available in Presque Isle from 9 a.m. to noon at a cost of $30 per class. Saturday, Feb. 16 – classic skiing. Saturday, Feb. 23 – backcountry preparedness.
UMPI events
The following sport event will take place at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
On Friday, Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m. UMPI will host a special father-daughter climbing night in honor of Valentine’s Day. The event is free for Gentile members and $5 per person for non-members.
Climbing nights will be offered now through May at UMPI’s Gentile Hall. Climbing nights will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 4th, Mar. 3rd, Apr. 7th and May 5th.
No experience is required. Please wear something comfortable to move in (no shorts permitted). There is no cost for members. $10 fee for non-members.
