HOULTON — Voters responded to last week’s primary elections by utilizing their voice in the ballot box. Like the rest of the nation, change is wanted by some, and looked down by others. However, the numbers speak for themselves when it came down to who would be the contenders in this fall’s November elections for Senate and House of Representatives.
Aroostook County voters chose to give Democratic candidate Thomas Allen of Portland the chance to run against the incumbent United States Sen. Susan Collins. Allen received 2,752 county votes while challenger Thomas Ledue received 692 of the total vote.
Statewide, 67,395 voters chose Allen as Collins’ opponent for the Nov. 4 election, with 11,548 votes going to Ledue.
Another key item in last week’s vote was the Question One bond issue. The question “Do you favor a $299,725,000 bond issue for natural resource, agricultural and transportation infrastructure that will leverage $29,780,000 in other funds?” was put on the ballot. Aroostook County voters were split in their decision of the bond with 4,219 in favor and 2,813 against. Statewide, 99,465 votes agreed to the bond with 70,931 against.
This fall’s election, voters will be deciding on new councilors, bond issues, local representatives, state and U.S. senators, as well as who will be the next president.
