To the editor:
Occasionally I choose to buy an alcoholic beverage when I do food shopping. I did my regular food shopping at Hannafords in Houlton and attempted to buy a bottle of beer. I am a 63-year-old male and did not have an I.D. with me. I was told that Hannaford has a “new policy” of requiring an I.D. for every alcoholic beverage sold.
This policy certainly serves to protect Hannaford Brothers but ignores the convenience to the consumer. I’ve come to expect certain courtesies with age. There seems to be a fear that some cashiers are too young to assess a person’s age.
Perhaps liquor should be sold at the customer service sections where there is usually an adult working and they would know whether or not to card seniors.
A sign warning customers that at 45 or under, you may be carded seems appropriate. This seems to be a policy in a Hannafords in Farmington where a 65-year-old woman was denied wine because she didn’t have I.D.
